August 2017: Nyinyart Yinda “Art New Ways” Residency
Our third three-week long Residency welcomed Eveline Kotai and Giles Hohnen, acclaimed Western Australian artists who came with a multitude of exciting new practices for our artists to try and then excel at. 23 senior and evolving artists participated so enthusiastically and with new such skill from early morning until dark that Eveline and Giles remarked that no university classes they’d taught had ever impressed them so much. We had just won our Yindjibarndi #1 Exclusive Land Title and our spirits were enlivened and dancing for expression through the new arts techniques our Guests were teaching us. It was as if our ancestors and our(country)and everything our holds were aching to be expressed in paint on canvas, stitches on linen, and carving on the yarranga marni boards. Children came and joined us after school every day, sharing in the stories and knowledge of their Elders as they painted. Our cultural excitement, and the personal and shared social hopefulness impacted on us as we created so quickly, we hardly knew ourselves. We made than 60 new works celebrating our relationships with our and water in a multitude of mediums.
